Unencrypted wireless network (ictp-open)

Note: this network is not available yet, but will be soon (mid August 2008)

General information

This wireless network does not have any particular hardware or software requirements. Any device with WLAN capabilities should be able to use it without setting up any parameter. The only disadvantage of this network is that it not as safe as the encrypted one (ictp-secure).

Usage

Simply scan for available wireless networks and connect to the one named ictp-open. You will be "connected" immediately, but before you can reach the Internet, you will have to log in via a web page to the ICTP firewall. Use your web browser to visit https://login.ictp.it/. Verify the authenticity by checking its fingerprints:

  • SHA1: 32:78:FA:1E:71:09:79:A6:17:07:74:C7:7A:B0:35:26:DA:7C:61:3B
  • MD5: 1A:7C:B9:C5:17:15:F0:73:A0:0A:1E:0E:B3:17:FF:24

Then enter your ICTP username and password, and keep this window open in the background. In this way the connection is kept active and you will not have to log in again.

If you close that window or browse away from that page, your login session will expire whenever there is no network activity for one minute.

If you try to access some Internet page without logging in, you will be directed to the login page first, and to the requested page after you have successfully logged in. However, in this way you will not have the web page in the background which helps keeping the connection active. Consequently, you might be asked repeatedly to log in again.

Security issues

This is not an encrypted network, so it's more vulnerable to attacks by hackers. To compensate this, make sure that you use encrypted protocols (https for the world wide web, ssh for logging in, etc.). If you are going to stay in the ICTP for a long time, try setting up the ictp-secure network.
