><p>Stig Lundqvist, a distinguished physicist from Sweden, received his Ph.D from Uppsala University in 1955.<p>

He joined the faculty at Chaimers University in Göteborg, Sweden, where in 1963 he became a full professor in theoretical physics.

In 1971 he was appointed to the Nobel Committee in physics and in 1980 became the Committee's chairman.

Lundqvist's involvement with the ICTP began in 1967. He was a driving force behind the creation of the ICTP Condensed Matter program and director of many ICTP colleges and workshops.

> <p>In 1985 he launched ICTP's Adriatico Research Conferences, which drew some of the world's foremost researchers in condensed matter physics and related areas to the ICTP.<p>

Professor Lundqvist chaired the ICTP Scientific Council from 1984 to 1992.
