Printing

In order to help the environment,  personal printing is generally limited per day and only in B/W.  If you need to print a poster in colour, you can place a request to the ICTP Print Shop at a cost of 10 Euro per poster.

The first thing to do when you want to print something is to choose a printer. In every computer lab there is at least one laser printer. Others can be found in the corridors of the Leonardo Building. Once you have located a printer, note its name (which is made clearly visible on a label). It is needed to address it from the computer. Typical names are lblab1, lbr1, lassoc1, ailab1, lmath1, lhe1 etc. See also this list of commonly used printers or the full list on the print server itself.

The first letter of the printer name corresponds to the building it is in. This is followed by a string telling where it belongs to: a computer lab, office or research group. Next, there is the letter c inserted (in the case of a color printer) and an ordinal number. It is normally not necessary for you to remember these rules.

Be aware that not all printers can be accessed by everyone. For instance, the printers of the research groups are reserved for their members. If you cannot print on one of them and think you should, please contact us to find out whether the permissions are set correctly.

Printing from Linux/UNIX

Files of the following types can be sent directly to the printer:

  • Plain text files (typical file name extension: .txt)
  • PostScript files (.ps)
  • Portable Document Format (.pdf)
  • LaTeX (.tex)

To send such files to the printer, use the command lpr -Pprintername filename. or use the print menu of the applications that can deal with the file formats.

When using the lpr command, the following options are available:

  • Printing single or double sided: add one of the following options to the lpr command:
       -o sides=one-sided
       -o sides=two-sided-long-edge
       -o sides=two-sided-short-edge

    for instance: lpr -Pmblab1 -o sides=one-sided letter.ps
  • Selecting a page range: use -o page-ranges=list, for example:
      lpr -Pmbr1 -o page-ranges=1-4,7,8 thesis.ps
  • Printing more than one page per sheet: You can have several pages printed onto one by reducing the size:
      lpr -Pailab1 -o number-up=2 manual.ps
Possible values are 1 (the default), 2 and 4.

To print files of a type not listed above you have to use the print menu of the application that handles that type of file. Typically this application will open a print dialog box where you are asked to specify a print command. This can be one of the two shown in the previous paragraph, omitting the file name, i.e. either lpr -Pprintername.

Printing from Windows

Printing from Windows is straightforward. You only have to choose the correct printer from the print dialog box.

Printing from your own computer

The following information is for private computers connected to the ICTP network.

One possibility is to transfer the file to be printed to your ICTP account and then print it from an ICTP computer.

Windows

You can install an ICTP printer as follows: From the Start menu choose Settings, Printers, Add Printer. The Add Printer Wizard will start. Click on Next, choose Network printer, Next, Connect to a printer... with URL http://printsv.ictp.it/printers/printername, Next, select the correct manufacturer and closest matching model (use the PS version if there are two alternatives) or choose Have Disk... after downloading and unpacking the driver files from the Ricoh support web site (search in the Internet for the keywords "ricoh universal print" and download one of the PS drivers),  OK, and set it up as default printer or not as you like.

Linux

Configure your computer to use printsv.ictp.it

as external CUPS server.

Mac OS X

For best results, download the Ricoh printer driver (for model IM C4500) from the Ricoh support web site and install it.

In OS X, under System Preferences/Printers, add an IP Printer and fill in the fields as follows:

Address: printsv.ictp.it
Protocol: Internet Printing Protocol - IPP
Queue: printers/printername
Name: printername
Use: Generic PostScript Printer    OR
Other - download this file and select it from the file dialog
