TWAS MEETS

More than 100 scientists from some 40 nations met last month at the ICTP to participate in the 10th General Meeting of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). The scientific highlight of the meeting took place on the first day when three Nobel Laureates gave presentations to the attendees: Carlo Rubbia (Physics 1984); Robert Huber (Chemistry 1988); and Werner Arber (Medicine and Physiology 1984). TWAS also received good news from the Italian government. Gianfranco Facco Bonetti, head of the scientific and cultural division of the Italian Foreign Ministry, announced that his government has decided to increase the Academy's budget from 1.9 billion to 3 billion lire over the next three years. Facco Bonetti also announced that the Italian government would begin taking steps to write the Academy's budget into law. Such action will provide TWAS with a permanent funding base, thus ensuring the Academy's long-term financial vitality.
